My One Weakness

I have a few weaknesses...actually a lot of them, but one of them is recycled books. I can be in a massive rush to get somewhere but when I see this stand, filled with used books, at exceptionally low prices, I just have to stop. I feel like the deer who looks absentmindedly into oncoming car headlights. My eyes glaze over, my feet slow down and my mind switches into book alert.

Today I found two. I picked up The Elegance of the Hedgehog by Muriel Barbery which I love. I am going to hold onto it for a friend and the other is Great Expectations by Charles Dickens. I have never read it or seen the movie! I can feel looks of surprise already :) You may wonder what my book cases at home look like with all these whimsical purchases. You don't want to know!  I will say that I am very good at stacking.

But hey, it was the best £3.00 I spent all day :)

Do you have a weakness you would like to share?
I hope it is as crazy as mine :)

Have you read either of the books above?
What did you think?

  1. Books and flowers!
    Always, books and flowers!

  2. Books, flowers, stationery, and glasses. Go figure! (and you're SO right about Charlie S. - definitely lost the plot. I hope it all works out OK in the end.) Thanks as ever for the kind words.

  3. Same and same!!

There is a used book sale at our library and it's like an all you can eat buffet for me - I load up on the books so that I can barely drag the bag home.

I found The Elegance of the Hedgehog at the book sale, too. Loved it, it became one of my all time favorites.

Thinking of starting a flower weakness!

  4. Books, books, more books . . . and tea. Love, love, love Charles Dickens! I'll have to say, though, this isn't my favorite of his books. Am curious about your other title. Can't wait to hear what you think about the two after you read them.

  5. Old books tie with antique shops for me (with England or New England being a favorite subject)...Rain or shine,I could get lost all day in a used bookstore! Our library has a yearly book sale full of treasures and I head straight for the Vermont section first. Last year I found "Folk Medicine - A Vermont Doctor's Guide to Good Health" published in 1958 (I know, it just screamed Virgo!)

Both of your new finds look interesting...I confess I had to google "The Elegance of the Hedgehog"! Good eye!

  6. I'm a big sucker for used/sale books, and also for sale priced dress making patterns. Who would have guessed?

You'll enjoy Great Expectations, I'm sure. I'm in the midst of a project to read all of Dickens novels in chronological order right now (for fun!) and I'm really enjoying it. We're not as far along as GE yet, but I've read it before.

  7. I have read both and am particularly fond of Great Expectations....My weaknesses, plural you note, are many but perfume, flowers and books are up the top...not to mention a lipstick or two....xv

  8. Books are like a breath of fresh air, or a flower that is blooming, ...or a sunset!
